The Fall School of the Hungarian Actuarial Society (HAS) will be held on 2023. november 10 – 11. at Hotel Visegrád in Visegrád.
Attendance is possible either in-person or online.

Inflation or stagflation, what is next?
In this presentation Gerrit Jan will analyse the drivers behind inflation in history and currently with a specific view on energy prices. He will also consider the implications for insurance companies.

Marcin Krzykowski:
De-risking – Regulatory and Customer Protection Developments in Selected European Markets – an Actuarial Perspective
Marcin Krzykowski will discuss recent developments in life business in Poland and non-life business in Romania (+ other cases) in context of consumer protection activity, both from the local supervisors and the European institutions.
He will challenge the audience with a number of questions, asking if the regulation went too far in some markets, if the ban on commissions seems a good thing for consumers and if price capping really helps consumers.
His presentation will include an outlook from the perspective of the actuarial profession.

Malcolm Kemp:
De-risking in pensions, insurance and other financial services: good or bad?
Malcolm Kemp will discuss different de-risking trends within the financial sector, such as trends towards unit-linked life insurance savings business, private sector pension provision shifts from Defined Benefit to Defined Contribution and issues involved in addressing protection gaps. He will explore regulator and professional body responses to such trends and how firms, organisations and individual actuaries might best respond to them.

Inflation risk management
Malcolm Kemp will explore how inflation and its uncertain evolution impacts insurers and pension funds and how actuaries can manage the risks involved, drawing on recent work within the Actuarial Association of Europe on inflation risk management.

Bence Zaupper:
Applications of AI Transformers (the technology behind ChatGPT) in insurance
Bence will provide an overview on applications of transformers in insurance relevant for actuaries. Transformers received a lot of attention recently as the key component of Generative AI models such as ChatGPT. Insurance use cases include mortality predictions, anomaly detection in time series, prediction of economic trends, extraction of information from documents and chatbots and often outperform traditional statistical methods. Bence will show how such models can be deployed quickly in a corporate environment.

About the speakers
Dr Gerrit Jan van den Brink
Dr Gerrit Jan van den Brink is working as a senior advisor via his company Risk Sigma GmbH on risk management, ESG, data and Artificial Intelligence topics. In this role, he advises companies and their senior management on implementation and further development of Enterprise Risk Management Frameworks. He acts as trusted advisor to the C-Level of organisations. Gerrit Jan has worked 34 years in the Financial and Energy industries in various roles (CRO, CFO, Operations Director and Auditor) in all three lines of defense. Gerrit Jan is a lecturer at various Universities in Germany and the Netherlands.
Marcin Krzykowski
Marcin Krzykowski is Principal with the Warsaw and Bucharest offices of Milliman, an actuarial consultancy. Marcin has 25 years of experience in the actuarial profession. He was involved in a wide range of projects in Poland and other Central European markets, including Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and others. His experience covers life and P&C and pension fund business. Marcin in President of the Polish Actuarial Association.
Malcolm Kemp
Malcolm Kemp is Managing Director of Nematrian and a visiting lecturer in enterprise risk management at Imperial College Business School, London. His career has included senior roles in insurance and investment management. In 2023 he handed over being chairperson of the Actuarial Association of Europe’s Risk Management Committee and ceased being a member of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board. Until 2021 he was the Chief Actuary (Actuarial Function Holder) for Threadneedle Pensions Limited and an Associate in Barnett Waddingham’s insurance consulting practice.
Matteo Carbone
Matteo Carbone is the Founder and Director of the IoT Insurance Observatory, Co-founder of Archimede Spac, Global InsurTech Thought Leader, and an investor. He is internationally recognized as an insurance industry strategist with a specialization on innovation. Matteo is author and world-renowned authority on InsurTech – ranked among top international InsurTech Influencers – and he has spoken to audiences in twenty different countries. He published the first bestseller dedicated to InsurTech: “All the insurance players will be insurtech” and is member of the Forbes New York Business Council. Before creating the IoT Insurance Observatory and co-founding Archimede, he spent eleven years in Bain & Company’s Financial Service practice.
Bence Zaupper
is a consultant at Finalyse Dublin in Ireland. He is a qualified actuary with 20 years’ experience in life and pensions, risk and capital management. He holds a post-graduate diploma in Data Analytics since 2021. Bence is the Deputy Chair of the Data Analytics Committee of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland and coordinated the Python Study group for members of the Society in 2023.
Expenses
Attendance fees
HAS members, HAS candidates: 12 000 Ft
For all others: 24 000 Ft
It is possible to participate in person or online, but in both cases registration is required. In case of online participation, only the participation itself needs to be registered.
Accommodation costs
Double room: 24 625 HUF pp per night.
Single room: 34 075 HUF pp per night.
Lunch: 9 432 HUF pp per occasion.
Dinner: 9 432 HUF pp per occasion..
A free breakfast buffet is available for hotel guests.
The price of the lunch and dinner include 1 glass of drink (wine, beer or soft drinks).
For retired HAS members, who attend the conference at their own expense, we provide a 50% discount.
In addition, university professors and students attending the conference at their own expense, the participation fee will be waived and additional 70% discount will be provided for the additional costs (accommodation, meals).
Please also record the accommodation and meal requirements of any accompanying persons who do not attend the conference, on the application form.
Please note that in addition to the expenses listed above (accommodation, meals, 1 glass of drink per occasion for lunches and dinners), the costs of any other services, room consumption and drinks must be paid individually by the participants with the hotel.
Cancellation Policy:
If you want to modify or cancel your registration for the Autumn School after the application deadline, please send your request to the address of the Event Organizing Committee (rszb@actuary.hu). Any further changes to applications (cancellation, modification of application) come with a cancellation fee:
- Until 2023 October 27 – 50% of accommodation and meals expenses,
- Until 2023 November 3 – 70% of accommodation and meals expenses
- After 2023 November 3 – 100% of accommodation and meals expenses
If HAS is able to find another participant for the vacant place and thus does not incur a penalty, may waive the penalty in whole or in part, but the payment of the penalty does not entitle the applicant to transfer, it will be used on the basis of the waiting list.

Note that HAS reserves the right to close registrations early, subject to the capacity of the venue. We recommend those interested to register as soon as possible.
More than one person can register on the same form if they request a VAT invoice to the same address. If the company is a member of a group VAT subject, we ask you to fill in both the tax number and the VAT group ID on the application interface.

Audio and Video recording
We would like to draw the attention of the participants to the fact that HAS reserves the right to make video and audio recordings of the event (both those on site and its online interface). Online access
After application, participants will be notified of the online connection process and the access link by sending information to the e-mail addresses registering on the application interface.
Attire
Recommended attire: comfortable casual wear.
Check-in
Check-in is possible from 2 p.m. on the day of arrival, check-out is required until 10 a.m. on the day of departure.

Parking: Free of charge for hotel guests in the hotel’s parking lot free of charge

The relaxation area (wellness, bar and bowling alley, darts, table football, billiards and ping-pong table) is open from 7:30 to 24:00 every day of the week and as long as there are consumer guests.
Registration small print:
The participation fee can be paid by bank transfer to the account number 10405004-50515150-57571007 for the Hungarian Actuarial Society. Please enter O/2023 under the heading “Comments” and the name, including first name, of the person(s) to whom the payment is made. If the employees of a company request an invoice to a common address, we do not ask for the names of the applicants, but for the name of the company in the bank transfer.
Invoices will be sent electronically to the e-mail address provided on the registration form. Based on the invoice sent electronically, please transfer the participation fee in advance to the above account number.
Extending your stay
If someone wants to extend the reservation beyond the duration of the conference, they can do so directly with the hotel (info@hotelvisegrad.hu) with reference to the HAS Autumn School. In this case, please also include in the e-mail correspondence the Event Organizing Committee (rszb@actuary.hu).
